More information : (ST 999479 to SU 010481) Old Ditch (NR) (1) Cropmarks (2) indicate extensions to the east and west of the ditch shown on OS 6". To the east (SU 018484) the extension shown by Colt Hoare (3) on his map is confirmed, while to the west it can be traced to (ST 984479). The name `Old Ditch' cannot be confirmed. It is not applied to this ditch by Colt Hoare and no authority is quoted in the ONB. (2-4) This linear earthwork is clearly a ranch boundary. To the E of SU 01394822 all trace of it has been destroyed by ploughing but W of here it comprises a bank up to 1.0m high above a 0.4m deep ditch to the S. and from SU 0073 4801 there is a counterscarp bank on the S side of the ditch. Between SU 00624797 and SU 00054790 the earthwork is clearly associated with a Celtic field system (SU 04 NW 26) and makes two right-angled bends in a manner typical of this type of earthwork. Both from the NW and E it is aligned onto the long barrow (SU 04 NW 11) at SU 00014789 which it skirts to the N. To the W of ST 99994790 the earthwork comprises a N facing scarp up to 1.5m high with a shallow ditch on the N side, and W of ST 99784802 it has been destroyed by tracked vehicle manoeuvres.
