Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 213610

Hob Uid: 213610
Location :
Dorset
Wimborne St. Giles
Grid Ref : SU0196017880
Summary : A ring ditch visible as cropmarks on air photographs. Listed by RCHME (in Bowen 1991) as Wimborne St Giles 141, it is circa 18 metres in diameter, and appears to intersect with a curving lynchet (the latter presumably being later). It is also immediately adjacent to another ring ditch (SU 01 NW 124).
More information : Two small barrows on Oakley Down (SU 0117), on the west
side of the road towards Woodyates were excavated by Colt Hoare circa
1800. One contained a disturbed interment and the other a cremation
with some large-headed nails in a cist. Neither barrow is numbered
in the description, but Grinsell though the second barrow might be
No 27 on Hoare's plan (SU 01 NW 18).

The Royal Commission could not identify either of them with any of
the barrows in this area. (1-3)
