Norwood Castle, a Norman motte-and-bailey earthwork, mentioned by Aubrey as 'a little citadel, with a 'Keepe Hill', both moated round.' (2). It is named 'Castle North Wood' on the Tithe Map (3). (2-3)

The motte and bailey, known locally as 'Norwood Castle'(a) stands on a low hill N of Dean farm. It consists of a low flat-topped motte, 1.5m high, with a sub-circular bailey to the NW measuring internally 37.0m NE-SW, by 26.0m transversely.
Both motte and bailey are ditched, and remain in generally good condition, though somewhat overgrown. 1:2500 AM Survey correct. (5-6) |
