Summary : Medieval deserted settlement earthworks identified on a northwest slope near New Wardour Castle before 1962. Part was ploughed in 1962, this area was surveyed and found to comprise a boundary ditch to the west and building platforms beside a former hollow-way now used as a hedge-line. A ston lined well, 33 feet deep. Pottery dating to the 12th-13th century and 18th-19th century was recorded. Field investigations in 1974 identified no surviving settlement pattern, however, a number of cultivation terraces were visible. The area of the 1962 investigation, was found to be under pasture. |
More information : Area: ST 924273. The earthwork remains of the former Md settlement of Wardour were recognized on a NW slope near New Wardour Castle before 1962. In that year part of the site was ploughed; this part was planned by the RCHM, Eng, and the rest remains under pasture. The settlement was bounded on the west by a ditch with closes running back to it from building platforms beside a former hollow-way now a hedge-line. A 33 feet deep well at ST 92412688(2) was stone-lined with a large flat stone with bucket-hole etc. Much 12/13th c and 18/19th c pottery was collected from the site (1). (1-2) No settlement pattern of Wardour DMV survives, though a number of cultivation terraces are visible on the NW slope centred ST 925272. The area of the 1962 investigation, now under pasture, was centred ST 924271 and the well at ST 92502709. Both sitings were confirmed by farm workers. (3)
