NZ 026856. Bastle. (See Type Site NY 88 SE 14). (3)
The bastle was probably built by Sir William Fenwick between 1571 and 1613. It was altered in the mid 19th century by raising the roof to add an extra floor, replacing the thatch with stone tiles, blanking off the gable door and refenstration. Internal stairs were also added at that time. A village store was opened in the ground floor and a tailor occupied the first floor.. A Post Office has since occupied the ground floor. Listed by Cathcart King and by Dodds. (4,5) |
