TETBURY ABBEY

DESCRIPTION + /

Monks who had settled at Hazleton from Kingswood, moved to Tetbury circa 1148-54 and founded an Abbey. However, the site proved unsuitable, and they returned to Kingswood circa 1164-70. Three 12th century stone windows in the wall of 13 and 15 The Chipping were formerly thought to be remains of the abbey, but are now thought to be part of a hall house. A 12th century stone arch in the ground of The Close Hotel are the only extant remains, but this is not in situ.
