More information : (ST 89008756) Supposed (NAT) ROMAN CAMP (R). (1) A small square camp believed to be Roman, probably connected with Roman station on the River Avon (ST 88 NE 2), is situated in a copse a short distance to the north. (2-3) (ST 89008756) Ancient Earthwork (NAT). (4) ST 89008756. Roughly square earthwork with outer ditch listed by Grinsell as ? Romano British, and named by him White Walls. (Probably named on the basis of Passmore (5a) who appears to apply the name simply because the site falls within White Walls Wood). Visited by Crawford in 1925 when he described it as a squarish raised platform with surrounding ditch and said it may possibly have been under the plough as the ramparts were all flattened. (5-6) Visited in 1956 by Rivet and G Webster who thought it was probably a medieval moated site. (7) This is a square platform with a ditch on the N and SW. It has the appearance of a medieval moat. The interior is heavily wooded and there are no traces of any buildings. An almost imperceptible causeway on the S side indicates the entrance. Published survey (1:2500) revised. (8) No change. Name (5) not confirmed. Revised survey (1:2500) correct. (9) ST 890875. Medieval moated site in White Walls Wood. Scheduled. (10) (ST 89008756) White Walls (NR). (11) The name White Walls should probably not be applied to this moat at all, but to the Roman settlement at ST 890871 (ST 88 NE 2). On the first edition 1" (circa 1817-28) the moat is not shown, but the surrounding wood is called Easton Grey Wood and the name White Walls applied to the Roman settlement. By the first edition 25" of the 1886 the wood has acquired the name Whitewalls Wood but the actual name White Walls is still applied to the Roman site. The moat appears to have also obtained the name White Walls from being within the re-named wood. (12)
The available aerial photographs which cover this area have been examined as part of the Cotswold Hills National Mapping Programme, but the area was covered by vegetation and the site was not visible (13).
