Summary : Box Tunnel - east portal constructed 1836-41. Subsequently altered by the construction of a separate portal into a quarry before 1887, by lining in brick in 1895, and by remodelling with a gallery circa 1938, again in engineering brick.
More information : ST 857694. Box Tunnel, East Portal. Less well known of the two portals this is situated in a long, deep cutting and lacks the architectural pretensions of the western portal. (1)
