More information : (ST 85586640) Roman Villa (GS) (site of). (1) Siting confirmed by (2), (3) and (4). The site was first recognised in 1937 from surface material and was excavated in 1937-8. The villa was of L-shaped winged-corridor type with four recognisable phases (from c 200 - 400 A.D.) the last being one of decline. Finds from the excavation went to Salisbury and Devizes Museums and to Atworth School. Allen APs show crop-marks of walls and (probably) ditches extending beyond the excavation. (2-4) The villa is under pasture and cannot be traced. The present farmer reports that no further material has been found on the site. (5) Excavations since 1971 by J G P Erskine have uncovered the remainder of the N wing. It was found that the courtyard had been paved with limestone cobbling, and a boundary wall on the west side had been demolished to give access to a residential building in the SW corner of the complex. Other features, not yet interpreted, were found on the S side. The excavation continues. (6-9)
The outline of pat of this villa can be seen on air photos taken during the excavation. |
