More information : (NZ 01837737) Kirkheaton Manor House, built late in the 16th, or early 17th centuries, contains a very thick wall crossing the old part of the house, and traces of a newel stair possibly indicative of an early pele on the site. (1)
Not listed in surveys of 1415 and 1541. (2)
The house is not outstanding (see photograph). It shows no external indications of a tower, apart from the square nature of the east wing, and the tradition of one appears to be based on the remains previously noted. (3)
A 16th century bastle, refronted in the early 17th century, extended to the right circa 1740 and restored in 1930. The older section is built of stone rubble with a Lakeland slate roof, while the 18th century wing is of ashlar with a lead roof. Listed Grade II*. (4)
Listed by Cathcart King and by Dodds. (5,6) |
