DESCRIPTION

Ruined remains of a moated manor house, built in the early to mid 16th century, possibly incorporating parts of a late 13th century manor house, granted a licence to crenellate in 1299. The standing remains comprise part of the hall and part of the gatehouse. The manorial buildings were set around a courtyard and surrounded by an oval moat. The house was razed in 1644.

Ruins of Yate Court. The gateway of 1299 was removed recently to Berkeley Castle. Only a few walls of the great mediaeval house remain. Burnt down during the Civil War. (2)

Yate Court has an oval moat, now drained, c.80 by 100 yds. The buildings were arranged round a courtyard. Licence to crenellate was granted in 1299. The house was rebuilt and enlarged by Henry VII's family. Occupied by Parliament forces in 1644 and burnt shortly afterwards. (3-5)

The ruins of Yate Court are in poor condition. Part of an angle tower 2.0 m. high is at ST 71258593, otherwise the remains are in the N.E. quadrant of the enclosure, centred at ST 7129 8599. For these see AO/62/131/3 taken from the W., and AO/62/131/4 taken from the S.W.

The moat which encloses the site is partly waterlogged and averages 2.0 m. deep. Except for the S.E. quadrant it has an external bank of upcast.

Published earthworks (25", 1919 and 1921) revised.

Earthworks published (25", 1919 and 1921) at ST 71188581 and ST 71268581 are parts of extensive field boundary banks, large and spread and probably of Md. origin, but of minor importance. (See ST 78 NW 10 for Md deerpark). (6)

Ruins of Yate Court Great Hall, chambers and service rooms. Mid C16 for the Berkley family, possibly incorporating parts of a late C13 manor. Razed in 1644. (10)

Listed as a strong house by Cathcart King. An oval moated area of some strength with remains of walls. Said to have had a portcullis gate. Licenced in 1299. (11)
