Summary : The possible site of Roman milecastle 20, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. A depiction from the James Irwin Coates Archive (a condition survey of Hadrian's Wall undertaken in the 19th century and including illustrations), shows a view from the Military Road to the entrance to Halton Shields Farm dated 1879. Within the road surface are shown several large stone blocks, two of which appear to be pivot stones from the milecastle gateway, together with threshold blocks. The field wall appears to be built of reused Roman stone. |

Situated in the garden of the cottage at the east end of Halton Shields, the south wall and gate being covered by the new house to the immediate west. Excavation in 1935 proved it to be about 59 ft long and 54 ft. 4 ins east to west, with type III gates. (2)
No visible remains, the site is covered by a house and garden. (3)
From excavation report (2) it is impossible to locate this milecastle accurately at 1:2500 but the Ordnance Survey position at NZ 0188 6868 has been accepted. There is no surface trace of the milecastle. (4)
