Summary : The possible site of Roman milecastle 16, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. The visible earthworks do not appear to be the right form for a milecastle.
More information : (NZ 0771 6830) MILE CASTLE (R) (Site of) (1) Milecastle 16, at Harlow Hill, was trenched for without success over 30 years ago. It seems possible that fresh calculations followed by selective trenching might locate the site. (2) Repositioned to NZ 07796830. (3) (NZ 07796830) MILECASTLE 16 (R) (Site of) (4) There are no surface remains at or near this spot. (5) Horsley was shown the place of the milecastle where the foundations still existed (6a). There is a slight platform in the corner of the field at the Ordnance Survey published position (NZ 0779 6830) but it is uncertain whether this is the milecastle as it is not the right shape; it measured approximately 23m north-south. (6) Scheduled (7) Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (8)
