More information : ST 763532. 'Roman Villa NW of Port Way' scheduled. An exploratory trench uncovered a Roman building with substantial walls; tiles, pottery and wall plaster were found, but the precise date of the building is uncertain. The site lies at the junction of three fields (from the scheduling map, this must be the field junction at ST 76255326), two of which retain traces of earthworks, probably belonging to the enclosure wall of the villa site, and the surrounding field system. John Prescott has found Roman tiles and RB pottery, including Samian and a range of coarse wares. These went to Taunton Museum. (2)
This may be the true site of Skinner's 'Blacklands' building (ST 75 SE 15). It is unlikely that two separate Roman buildings as substantial as the evidence suggests would be within 900 metres of each other, and Skinner's siting is vague. OS air-photos 71 127 121-2 show nothing conclusive. (3)

SO 27 Listed as the iste of a Roman villa. This may be the true site of Skinner's 'Blacklands' building (SO 26). It is unlikely that two separate Roman buildings as substantial as the evidence suggests would be within 500m of each other and Skinner's siting is vague. (5)
