Summary : The site of a Roman building indicated by surface finds of pottery, flue tiles and roofing stones; excavation uncovered a pavement of large stones, site of a villa? However this site may be a duplicate of ST 75 SE 20.
More information : Roman remains, consisting of pottery of all kinds from Samian to coarse brown and grey ware, nails, glass, flue tiles and roofing stones, were found in a field called 'Blacklands' (because of its dark earth), situated a little above the farmhouse of Row Farm in Hemington parish. Trenching revealed a pavement of large stones, but no wall foundations. There is no field near Row Farm known as Blacklands. (1) Skinner is almost certainly referring to 'Blacklands' at ST 766540 north of Upper Row Farm. This field has not been ploughed for many years and is flat and featureless. (2) Although the siting to 'Blacklands' at ST 766540 seems on the evidence to be good, there is a strong possibility that the site should actually be at ST 763533 - see ST 75 SE 20. (3) SO 26 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa. (4)
