More information : (NAME NZ 098805520) Roman Altar found (T.I.) (1) An altar to Cocidius was found in 1874 on the north bank of the Derwent opposite Bludderburn Dene in the West Haugh Field of Newlands Haugh Farm. The O.S. map gives an approximate site. It is about 3ft high by 16ins wide and is inscribed:- DEO VERNO STONO COCIDI OVERIIIS GERVSL and was in the possession of James Surtees of Ebchester who presented it to the late Henry Swinburne of HamsterlyHall near Ebchester. (2) There have been some boubts as to its authenticity. Haverfield (a) does not accept it and Heunber (b) classes it under 'Falsa' but concedes that it may be a genuine altar recut. Bosanquet (c) thinks it had been tampered with but Bruce(d) and Collingwood (e) regard it as genuine so does Wright (2) whose argument is convincing. In 1940 it was in Upshaw College near Durham. (3) Location of the altar not confirmed. The field in which it was found is under plough. No further information. (4)
