Summary : Railway viaduct. Built in 1857 by Thomas Bouch for the Stanhope and Tyne Railway as part of the line to Consett. Yellow brick with sandstone ashlar dressings; cast iron railings. 12 semi-circular arches, 50' diameter and 150' at highest, on tapered piers with 3-stage buttresses to those at full height, the others having corresponding detail. Central tallest piers have wide ashlar coping to 3 sides of buttress plinths; each stage has ashlar coping continuous with bands around piers. |
More information : (NZ 09594900) Hownsgill Viaduct (NAT). (1) Hownsgill Viaduct, still used for goods traffic, was built of bricks in 1857. It replaced an ingenious double incline worked by a single steam haulage engine designed by Robert Stephenson. Originally part of the Stanhope and Tyne railway from Waskerley to Consett.
