Somerset
Mendip
Chilcompton
Grid Ref : ST6365050050
Summary : A small multivallate promontory fort on Blackers Hill. Earthworks define the north and west sides of the fort. The other sides of the fort relied on a steep natural scarp for defence.
More information : [ST 636500] CAMP [GT]. (1)

A fine example of a Promontory Fort 15 acres in extent, is
situated at Blacker's Hill, 1 mile south of Chilcompton. In
addition to natural precipices on the south and west, the
original defences were double banks and ditches. Although
ploughed out in places and greatly denuded, the outer Bank on
the N.W. is still 40 ft. high, whilst the N.E. side is still in
fair preservation, with an inner bank of 6' - 8', an outer of
10' - 12', and 40' from crest to crest. On the N.E. is a simple
gap forming the entrance. (2) (4) (5)
