More information : [ST 695437] Earthwork [G.T.] (1) A promontory fort at Merehead, half a mile S.W. of Leighton, is triangular in shape and covers an area of about six acres. On the east there is a double bank across the hill (not more than 4ft. high in 1903 (3) ), with, according to Phelps (a), an entrance near the middle. The other two sides are protected by steep natural slopes. (2-3)
"The earthwork at ST 696437 is just a hedge/lynchet possibly accentuated by the nature of underlying rock. There is no evidence at all of there having been any camp either Roman or E.I.A. here." (4)
This earthwork at ST 69564371 consists of a mutilated and discontinuous bank, with the remains of a ditch to the east, extending from the steep natural slopes on the North to ST 69564362, part way across the promontory. There is no obvious original entrance. No traces of the bank remain to the south and it is uncertain whether this is a promontory fort (unfinished?) or a later enclosure. The hedge/lynchet mentioned by Tratman is probably that which is some 30.0m. to the east of the earthwork and is approximarely parallel to it. Published survey (1/2,500) revised. (5)
