More information : (NZ 086 132) "The Roman bridge (at Greta Bridge) stood a little
below the present one. If search were carefully made, some vestiges
of the old bridge might probably be discovered." (Dymond, Arch J,
118, 1961 145ff suggests that a river the width of the Greta in the
vicinity of a fort and settlement would have had a stone bridge. The
abutments may survive, perhaps encased in earthen ramps carrying the
roadway.) (1)
A small rescue excavation by Durham University in March/April 1973
revealed the road (RR 82) at NZ 0874 1325 and NZ 0871 1327 (see
NZ O1 SE 16). Sufficient was exposed during investigation to
establish the line, which when produced to the river sites the bridge
at NZ 0867 1330. No trace of possible abutments survives in the
banks at this point. (2)
