Summary : A Roman and Medieval lead mining area: a Roman pig of lead was found in the area.
More information : A Roman pig of lead inscribed ADRIAN (AD 117-138) was found by miners in 1855 at Hurst (NZ 0402) where during the 19th century they broke into narrow Roman adit workings (1). The Hurst mining area, supposed to be the oldest in the Kingdom (a) extends some 3 to 6 miles north of Marrick (SE 0798) but the site of the mill mentioned by Whellan is not now known. (1)
