Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 197576

Hob Uid: 197576
Location :
Somerset
Mendip
Priddy
Grid Ref : ST5418053580
Summary : A group of possible Bronze Age round barrows associated with one of the so-called Priddy Circles (ST 55 SW 4 and child records). A total of five possible barrows - four within Priddy Circle 4 (ST 55 SW 127) and one just outside its projected western side - are included within the scheduled monument description for the enclosure, although Ordnance Survey field investigation in 1966 was only able to identify 3 mounds in total (measuring between 0.3 and 0.7 metres high). 3 mounds are said to have been dug into in 1832, with ashes reportedly being found. Like the Priddy Circles themselves, dating evidence is lacking. Interpretation as round barrows and dating to the Bronze Age is based on surviving morphology and analogy with other such monuments.
More information : [ST 54185359] Details of tumulus only. (1)

Four mounds, probably tumuli (T.313A, T.313-5) are situated
within the perimeter of the northernmost of the four Priddy
Circles.

[See AO/LP/63/206] (ST 55 SW 4). (2)

Only three ploughed down barrows are visible on the ground. At
ST 54185358, a bowl barrow 0.7 metres high (T.315, Grinsell's
East Harptree 2a). At ST 5422 5359 a bowl barrow 0.6m high.
(T.313, East Harptree 2b); and at ST 54235357 a bowl barrow 0.3m
high. (T.134, East Harptree 2c). There is no trace of Tratman's
T.313A, (East Harptree 2d) which Tratman positions at ST
54145351

Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

Tumulus deleted from field document. (4)
