More information : [ST 5113 2972] ROMAN BUILDING [GS] (site of) (1)
The site of this building at Hurcot was examined by Hasell (3) in 1827 and described by Hoare. It covered about 1/2 acre of ground and traces of hypocausts, baths and mosaics were found. Tesserae and pottery are in Taunton Museum. In 1952, Dewar, assisted by A. D. Hallam, located foundations, with a floor of opus signinum some 100 yds. S.E. of the position shown by O.S. on the 1930 edition and on the opposite side of the 'Ancient Road' at ST 51152975 [note slight discrepancy with current 6"] Marks on A/Ps probably indicate site (5). (2-5)
Although this field is under plough there are no indications of the building. Mr Hallam confirms the O.S. siting. In Taunton Museum are a fragment of rim - A 376, two pieces of flue tile - A 377 and twenty-seven tesserae - A 378. Neither county museum nor Hallam know of a plan of the villa. (6)
SO 57 Listed as the possible site of a villa. (7)
Geophysical survey in 1993 located and planned the villa buildings and suggested that the site may continue to the east. (8)
