Robin Of Risingham

Hob Uid: 19329
Location :
Northumberland
Corsenside
Grid Ref : NY9014085640
Summary : Roman rock carving, probably of a hunting diety, mutilated in the 19th century.
More information : (Name centred NY 90158536) Robin of Risingham (GSC) (Rems
of) (T.I.). (1)

Robin of Risingham, a figure cut in relief on a rock detached from a
quarry cliff. Before mutilation, shortly before Dec. 1819 (3), the
figure, wearing a tunic and holding a bow in its right hand and a
hare in its left, stood to a height of approx. 4ft. There was a
panel above it and a rectangular block, probably an altar, to its
right (2). The association of the figure with an ansate panel is
sufficient proof of its Roman date.(3).

The bow and hare would associate the figure with hunting, probably
Silvanus perhaps in the guise of Cocidius. (2-3)

Only the lower half of the carving survives at NY 90148564. See
photograph. (4)
