More information : [ST 36565704 and ST 36595708] TUMULI [G.T.]. (1) Two barrows:- T.279, 12 ft. in diameter and two ft. high; T.280, 40 ft. in diameter and 3 ft. high. (2) T. 280: ('A') at ST 36555705, is a well preserved bowl barrow. It is 13.0 m. is diameter and 1.4 m. high, with no visible ditch.
T: 289. ('B') at ST 36575709, is a mound 6.5 m. in diameter and 0.2 m. high with no visible ditch. It is coincident with an old O.S. trig. point and may have been constructed for this purpose, although it appears to be a bowl barrow.
('C'): At ST 36585708, is a circular stony rise, 0.1 m. high and 9.5 m. in diameter. It is probably a ploughed down bowl barrow. (3) ST 36555704 ('A'); ST 36575709 ('B'); ST 36575707 Barrows. (4) ST 36615706. Barrow, possibly site of. A group of at least three tumuli believed to be of Bronze Age date are located on the summit of Loxton Hill. During the drought of 1976 an observation was made of the constituent material of the tumulus at ST 36595708. The mound had been constructed of conglomerate, probably transported from the Winscombe Vale. (5)
A probable Bronze Age round barrow is visible on aerial photographs as an earthwork. The site is centred on ST 3655 5705 and comprises two sections of a sub circular mound which if complete would measure 13 metres in diameter. The barrow is bisected by a field boundary and is surmounted by an old trig point, and so is partly obscured and may have been disturbed. This record previously referred to four barrows; three of these are now recorded separately (see ST 35 NE 159 / UID: 1493905 & ST 35 NE 160 / UID: 1493908). This barrow is the one described above as T:289 ('B') in source 3 and as 'A' in source 4. The possible barrow mentioned above in source 4 at ST 36615706 is not visible on any of the available aerial photographs.(6-7).
