More information : [ST 30881049] ROMAN VILLA [GS] (Site of) (1)
A considerable Roman villa, at Wadeford, was excavated in 1810 and 1861. The plan [see AO/60/139/5] was not clearly traced but it was possibly of courtyard type. Seven mosaic pavements, hypocaust, tiles, wall plaster, much pottery and coins of Claudius I, Gallienus and Tetricus were found. Some finds are in Taunton Museum and include a BA spearhead [see AO/60/139/6.] Other finds were noted by Haverfield as in Mr. J. Brown's house nearby. He also confirmed that the O.S. siting was correct. The site is scheduled. (2-5)
The field is under grass; no trace of the villa was seen. (6)
Pottery, metal objects, coins, painted plaster and the B.A. spearhead (Acc.No.34B) from this site are displayed in Taunton Museum. (7)
ST 309105. Four pits were excavated at Wadeford Roman Villa in 1981. The details of the cuttings are as shown on Fig 8 (see illustration card). The natural subsoil was a heavy pale brown clay in cuttings 1, 2 and 3. This was disturbed and overlain by building material and walling of Roman date. Cutting 4 (not shown) was dug into loose topsoil and did not reach any undisturbed deposits. The most significant information was from cutting 2, where the mortared stone walling of the villa was shown to be intact below 60cm. (8)
