More information : (NY 93437460) Tumulus (L.B.) (1) A bell barrow with well-defended encircling rampart. Excavation in 1929 exposed a badly crushed cist containing a partial cremation in the fragmentary remains of an urn. A stone ball, also found, is in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle. (2) An earth and stone round barrow 1.4 m high, and planted with trees. It is not a 'bell', the "encircling rampart" being a tree ring. Surveyed at 1/2500 (3) Condition unchanged. (4)
NY 9343 7460. Round cairn 650m S of Swinburne Castle. Scheduled RSM No 20935. The cairn, constructed fo large stones and earth, is 20m in diameter and 1.4m high. The ditch is no longer visible as a surface feature, but is visible as a soilmark 2m wide. The cairn was partially excavated in 1929 when a stone cist containing a cremated body and the remains of a Bronze Age pot and a stone ball were uncovered. (5)
