More information : [ST 22464393] An LBA founder's hoard, dated c. 500 (1) or 700 B.C. (2), was found in 1870, when draining a field at Wick Park, on the Fairfield Estate, Stogursey. It was found in clay, c.2 feet deep, to the N.E. of Wick Plantation [? Wick Park Covert] "about 100 yards left of the hunting gate 5 yards from the fence." [Sited on small-scale plan (4)] For some time the hoard was kept at St.Audries, Exmoor in the possession of Sir Alexander Acland-Hood; it was then loaned to Taunton Museum where it remains. It comprises 20 fragments of swords, 29 socketed axes and 37 fragments of socketed axes, 2 palstaves, 2 gouges, 2 daggers or knives, a chape, 20 complete and fragmentary spear-heads and 34 fragments of bronze including 15 with moulding-jets. (1-4) Assuming that the hunting-gate at ST 22424380 is the one referred to above, the siting by H.St.G. Gray seems to be tolerably accurate. Part of the hoard in Taunton Museum is on display (see G.P. AO/64/88/5). (5) No additional information. (6) Additional Bibliography. (7)
