More information : (ST 29983723-sited from HHR map) Castle wall to rear of Nos 10 to 14 consec) Water Gate Vaulted Undercroft Grade II* The Water Gate of the Castle is set back from the road down a passage between Nos 11 and 12 West Quay. Stone gateway, probably C13, with segmental arch rings, some chamfered. The arch nearest the river is of rubble repaired with brick. The wall here is approx 12 ft thick. The Water Gate forms the entrance to the yards behind Nos 10 and 11, where a curved portion of wall survives in the rear parts of the buildings. There are similar remains visible in the rear yard of No 2 Castle Street. The room built over the Water Gate belongs to No 12, which also retains part of the castle wall to rear. This part runs behind the site of the former No 14 West Quay (now demolished). Exposed walls about 12 ft thick, probably C13, made of red Wembdon stone, much patched with blue lias and brick. To the west side of this wall, and lying parallel with it, is a long barrel-vaulted cellar with one window embrasure penetrating the west side of the vault. This undercroft is entered from Chandos Street. The whole wall with the Water Gate and undercroft is an important survival from the C13 castle. All the listed buildings in West Quay with the Town Bridge in Town Bridge form an important group. Also Nos 5 to 14 (consec) form an extremely important group with the listed buildings in Castle Street, King Square, No 1 Bond Street and No 18 Queen Street. (1)
