Summary : A Roman villa was discovered in 1845 during road widening. The site is now overgrown with nettles and is waterlogged. All that remains are low rubble walls of 0.6m width and 0.5m high.
More information : [ST 28021058] ROMAN VILLA [G.S.] (Remains of) (1) Site found in 1845 during road widening and partially excavated by Chas. Elton. Living and bath rooms, hypocausts, geometric mosaics, painted wall plaster, flue tiles, roofing slates, many small finds, Samian and other pottery, window and other glass, metal and bone, lead piping, 'balls of lead the size of oranges' iron slag etc. Plan of villa not clear. (2) The site is now overgrown with nettles and water-logged. All that remain are low rubble walls of average width 0.6 metres and maximum height 0.5 metres. These walls were only traced with the greatest difficulty, and as the site at some time appears to have been part of an ornamental garden it is possible that they have suffered some rearrangement, derangement or other interference. The rectangular feature to the SW, particularly, seems to have served as a small ornamental pond. A 25" survey has been made. (3) No change. Some material from the site is now in Taunton Castle Museum (Acc.Nos.A695, A702, and A2840-2871). (4) (ST 28021058) Roman Villa (R) (remains of) (NAT) (5) No change from report of 1.10.65; still in dense woodland. (6) The remains of the villa are completely overgrown by dense vegetation. (7) SO 69 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (8) site was the subject of a Time Team episode in 2004. (9)
