More information : [ST 2273 1983] BARTON GRANGE [G.T.]. (1)
Barton Grange represents the remains of the domestic wing of a large 16th c. mansion, probably on the site of a grange of early Md. date, belonging to Taunton Priory. Reconstruction in the 19th c. concealed much of the Tudor work and in 1931 two-thirds of the original house were demolished. A model of the house is at Taunton Museum. (2-3)
The remains of the 16th c. mansion, although much altered and recently divided into flats, still retains apparently original features of architectural interest. (See GPs AO/65/194/ 4 and 5). (4)
