More information : (ST 1359 4129) Tumulus (NR) (1) East Quantoxhead 16: a bowl barrow, 10 paces x 1 1/2 ft. (2) Two additional barrows identified by A.T. Wicks in 1926 (3) at ST 1359 4123 and ST 1363 4123: Listed in 2-presumably not found. (2,3) The published feature (Grinsell's 16) is a bowl barrow It is 0.4m. high and has been dug away at the centre. Published survey (25") revised. The Wicks' barrows could not be found. (4) No change. Two minor mounds were identified at ST 1360 4124 and ST 1364 4124, each being up to 6.0 metres in diameter and 0.2 to 0.3 metres high. They are almost certainly the features seen by Wicks but neither could be classified as barrows, indeed there is no clear evidence to suggest that they are even artificial. The general area is uncultivated peaty moorland. (5)
A large Bronze Age burial cairn lies to the east of the Greenway path at ST 1351 4134. The cairn comprises a stony circular mound, 11.5m in diameter and 1.1m high. The cairn is partly obscured by heather and bracken, but a sub-rectangular hollow, 3m x 2m x 0.8m deep, on the northern side is probably a robbing pit. As noted by authy 5, the mounds to the south are most likely to be natural features. The cairn was recorded as part of the EH survey of the Quantock Hills AONB (6).
