More information : [ST 0850 2126] Cothay Barton Remains of MONASTERY [G.T.] [ST 0853 2130] CHAPEL [G.T.] (Remains of). (1) [ST 0852 2129] GATEWAY [G.T.] (Remains of). (2) The plan and detail of Cothay conform to the small manor house of the second half of the 15th c., but the porch doorway may be that of an earlier house, and during recent repairs the remains of wooden window frames were found surrounding the 15th c. windows, which would imply that part of the structure is earlier. See AO/61/229/4. The Chapel: The east end of the gallery gives into a fair sized oratory over the porch. The Gateway was restored in 1926-7. As restored it is similar to that at Holcombe Court [Devon 35 NE 1] and with the evidence provided by an armorial stone it seems that it was the last addition to the place, perhaps as late as 1530. (3) The architectural description given in 2 is accurate, additions were made to the northern side of the house in 1938. The owner, Miss Ashley Rushton knew of the legend of a monastery on the site, but in spite of making many enquiries had been unable to substantiate the fact. Ground Photograph AO/61/253/7 shows the Chapel and Gateway with the house in the background, taken from the east. The building shown as "chapel" on O.S. 25" of 1904 has, according to the owner, only been in use as such since 1947. The conversion was affected by removing the floor of what was a two storeyed building. There is no evidence, other than the 25-inch, that the building was ever used as a chapel before 1947. Authority 2 refers only to the oratory above the porch of the house. The present chapel is apparently contemporary with the gateway (i.e. c. 1530) and may have been nothing more than a porter's lodge. (4) This building is now called Cothay Manor. (5) No change. (6) I Cothay Manor A large late C. 15 house of irregular plan with some later additions. Interesting interior features. See Country Life, Vol. LXII, pp. 596 and 626.
