More information : A centurial stone, in the wall of a 17th c. house at Hexham, is 1 ft. by 8 1/2 ins., and bears the inscription CH.VIIII>MA RGI.COMA. This is taken to read 'Cohortic nonae, centuria Marci (i) Comati or Communis (i.e. 'The century of Marcius Comatus (or Communis) of the ninth cohort'). (1) The stone could not be located among the surviving 17th c. houses in Hexham. (2)
The centurial stone was found in 1885. It is now built into the interior face of the west wall of Hexham Abbey nave. The stone is recorded as No.1169 in the Roman Inscriptions of Britain. (3)
