Summary : In 1864 two Roman altars were found when the new street from Market Place to Battle Hill was being formed. They are now preserved at the west end of the nave of the Priory Church of St Andrew, Hexham.

new street [BEAUMONT STREET] from MARKET PLACE to BATTLE HILL was
being formed.

One is plain but the other is inscribed:-

APPOLLINI
MAPONO
TERENTIVS
F OVR
FIRMVS SAEN
PRAEF CASTR
LEG VI V.P.F.
D.D.

Sited to the centre of BEAUMONT STREET (1)

They are now preserved at the west end of the nave of the Priory
Church of St. Andrew, Hexham.
The un-inscribed altar is very weathered and its base is
missing. (2)
