Summary : A Roman altar with a Greek inscription was found at Corbridge in the vicar's glebe a little before 1754. The altar is made of sandstone and is 4' high and 20" wide. Allegedly now in Tullie House Museum, Carlisle, but not confirmed by Field Investigator.

[CARLISLE].

The altar is of sandstone, 4'0" high, 20 inches wide, with a jug
carved on the left and a patera on the right. The inscription is a
Greek hexameter in five lines, the first a little blurred:-

"Thou see'st me, an altar of ASTARTE, PULCHER set me up". (1-4)

NY 98856443 Found in the churchyard at CORBRIDGE (5-6)

Present location of altar not confirmed. (8)

This altar is indeed at Tullie House. Its accession number is CALMG: 1889.130.1892.27. (9)
