More information : [NY 9167 6998] MILECASTLE [G.S.C.] (site of) [T.I.] (1)
Milecastle 27 was located on April 5th, 1930, "347 feet to east fence on line of wall". (2) Excavation in 1952 proved it to be a long axis milecastle, measuring internally 60 ft. N-S and 50 ft. E-W. The milecastle is of type IV, ascribed, like type II, to the Twentieth Legion. No coins or inscriptions were found. There was only one piece of pottery but it was not dateable. (3)
Visible as a low but distinct mound in a pasture field. No stonework remains. Surveyed at 1/2500. (4)
NY 9166 6998. The milecastle survives as a slight squarish platform with a maximum height of 0.4m, but it is poorly defined to the north and east. There is nettle growth within. (5)
