Summary : A Roman bath house is visible as a demolished building on air photographs. Excavation in 1956-7 proved it to be of modified "Reihntyp", measuring 160ft by 140ft overall, with an unusual peristyle courtyard. It was built in circa AD 80, and demolished before AD 98, having been abandoned several years earlier. Despite an emergency Preservation Order by the Department of Environment, the bath house has been severely damaged on the orders of the landowner A. Cuthbert of Beaufront Castle, Hexham, in an attempt to destroy it. |

This was discovered in 1955 during the laying of a drain from new sileage-pits (at Red House) to Red House Burn (see Fig. 1 for plan). Excavation in 1956-7 proved it to be of modified "Reihntyp", measuring 160ft by 140ft overall, with an unusual peristyle courtyard. It was built c.AD 80, and demolished before AD 98, having been abandoned several years earlier. Finds included a coin of Vespasian; several bronze brooches of Collingwood's types Q & R; and late 1st c. Samian ware and coarse pottery. (2)

Despite an emergency Preservation Order by the D. of E. the bath-house, 150 feet square with walls up to 4 ft. high, has been severely damaged on the orders of the landowner A. Cuthbert of Beaufront Castle, Hexham, in an attempt to destroy it. A report by Miss D. Charlesworth is expected. The site was fully excavated in 1956 and filled in again. (4)
