"At the west end of Stanhope town, lying between it and the river
Wear is an eminence called Castle Hill or Castle Heugh ..... the
crown of the hill forms ..... an oblong figure ..... thirty paces in
width; to the north and east ..... it is defended by a deep ditch; a
ditch crosses the crown of the eminence, and divides it into
irregular parts ...... a wall was discovered, which appeared to
defend the whole summit of the hill, built of ashler work, strongly
cemented ...... certain it is, that a castle stood here (Stanhope)
in the days of Bishop Beck (1283-1310) for he granted lands ..... on the west side of the castle of Stanhope". [2]

No remains of former castle or traces of ditches now exist. The
present building, now a reform school, is in good condition but not outstanding. [4]
Stanhope Castle, Grade II* Large house. Now flats. 1798 for Cuthbert Rippon; 1823 additions dated on rainwater heads, for his son Cuthbert Rippon, M.P. for Gateshead; 1875 addition (to house collection of stuffed birds and animals). Sandstone ashlar with plinth; roof not visible. Irregular plan. South elevation: 2-storey, 3-bay main entrance front with adjoining one-storey, 5-bay conservatory link to 2-storey, 3-bay gabled wing on lower ground level. 11 bays in all. [5]
