More information : [NY 83839817] Tombs [R] (1)

Originally three Roman stone-built tombs at Rochester. Only the
circular tomb now survives, decorated with an animal head on one of
the stones. An urn containing cremated bones; a fragment of glass
bottle and a Severan coin were also found in this tomb.
To the south of these remains are the sites of one square and one
rectangular tomb. Some of the stones are now incorporated in the
sheepfold on the NE. See plan. (2)

There is evidence of a third square tomb about 20 yds from the
others. The position of the three square foundations are still
visible. (3)

MacLauchlan's plan shows four symbols against the annotation
'Tombs'. (4)

Description of circular tomb correct. Overall dimensions, 5.6m
diameter and 1.0m high. The decoration referred to by Authy 2 can no
longer by distinguished.
South-east of the above feature at NY 83849815 is a rectangular
depression 9.0m by 4.0m with a maximum depth of 0.4m, doubtless the
site of the rectangular and square tombs. No masonry was visible.
NY 83869816 A square depression 3.5m by 3.5m with a maximum depth of
0.3m. No masonry visible but obviously the site of the tomb referred
to by Authy 3.
An examination of the sheepfold mentioned by Authy 2 showed many
squared Roman stones. (5)

Condition of extant tomb and sites of the others are unchanged from
report of 11 9 56.
Published survey (25") revised. (6)

The animal head referred to by authority 2 is on the west arc, and
diametrically opposite to this on the east arc is an embossed
diamond shape 0.03m. (See photograph). (7)

Roman cemetery comprising of the remains of monumental tombs,
presumably those of ranking officers from the fort (NY 89 NW 7), and
c100 small round barrows, each covering a pit containing a
cremation. (8)
