Summary : The site of turret 35A, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. The Roman turret measures 3.7 metres east-west x 2.4 metres internally (excluding the blocking); the walls are up to 0.75 metres high (three courses) and the wing walls are unusually small, 1.0 metre (east-west) and up to 0.7 metres deep. The turret is now consolidated. A low mound 6 metres to the south is possibly excavation debris. |

Turret 35a constructed with narrow walls and door to east, is situated 100 yards before reaching the summit of the hill west of Milecastle 35. During the Roman period it had become disused and almost completely demolished. In 1958 the site was excavated and the remains consolidated by the Ministry of Works. Scheduled. (2-5)
Resurveyed at 1:2500. The reconstructed masonry stands two courses high 1.0m in depth, and has an external measurement of 3.5m N-Sx7.0m E-W. GPs AO/65/143/5 & 6 show the SW x NE aspects respectively. (6)
Excavated in 1958 by Miss J. Birch in advance of Ministry of Public Building Works consolidation work. Full report (7). A rough inscribed slab found 63 ft. east of the Turret (9) has been deposited by Ministry of Public Building Works in the Museum of Antiquities, Newcastle upon Tyne (8). (7-9)

Ordnance Survey measurements incorrect. The turret at NY 8008 7008 measures 3.7m east-west x 2.4m internally (excluding the blocking); the walls are up to 0.75m high (three courses) and the wing walls are unusually small, 1.0m (east-west) and up to 0.7m deep. The turret is now consolidated. A low mound 6m to the south is possibly excavation debris. The rough inscribed slab is now recorded under NY 87 SW 36. (11)
