More information : [NY 8308 7073] Milecastle [G.S.] (Site of) (1)
In the field on the north, where the road approaching Shield on the Wall from the east swings south, are the remains of Milecastle 33. When excavated between 1935-6, it was found to be a long-axis milecastle measuring 78' x 68' externally, with a visible north gate of Type II. Little of the south gate remains apart from the east outer jamb, and a large threshold of the type used at milecastles 13, 17 and 53. (2-3)
Resurveyed at 1/2500. The remains are represented by a grass covered platform with some protruding masonry. The remains of the north gate are well preserved, though only the east outer jamb of the south gate is now visible. See G.Ps. AO/65/143/7 & 8. (4)
