More information : [NY 8508 7110] Turret 31B (Site of) (1)
Turret 31B is unlocated. (2)
This is possibly sited at NY 8505 7109 where, in oblique sunlight, as light square platform, 3.0 m. N-S by 4.0 m. E-W, is faintly discernible abutting the S. side of the wall foundations. The site is under turf, but has one line of stones (possibly the S. wall) protruding at ground level. The centre when probed, was also found to be stoney. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)
Turret 3lB has been located and excavated by R. Harris and assigned to the XX Legion. Details not yet published. (4)
"I can confirm that your investigator has located the exact position of Turret 31B, as located by Harris in 1966". [The excavation report has not yet been published]. (5)
Investigated in 1966 by R.W. Harris and proved to be c. 1080 yards W. of mile castle 31. A small excavation was begun on the E. half of the turret and revealed a doorway at the E. end.of the S. wall. The threshold had been raised probably later in the 2nd. century. Investigation showed that the S. wall was built to standard 'A' construction (Arch. Ael. (4) 9.255f.). The turret was not very well preserved, with a great deal of stone robbing. The interior remained unexcavated and only a small amount of pottery, all unstratified, was found. Its construction indicates that the turret was probably built by the 20th Legion like many others in the central Wall sector. (6)
Slight swelling visible at the site published by OS at NY 8506 7190. (7)
Scheduled (8)
Located on the English Heritage map of Hadrian's Wall 2010. (9)
