Summary : The site of Roman milecastle 30, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. It survives as an outward-facing scarp with a maximum height of 0.8 metres. Part of the east wall, 3.1 metres long 0.6 metres high and 2.25 metres thick remains. The milecastle was seen as an earthwork and mapped from air photographs; the line of an agger is clearly visible taking a curving course from east to west. |

Milecastle 30, a long axis type, was examined in 1927. The curve of the Military Way towards its south gate is plainly visible on the ground. (2-3)
Resurveyed at 1:2500. The remains consist of a mutilated earthen platform, with a fragment (3.0m long) of the E. wall exposed near the N.E. angle. The Military Way is well defined by agger and ground swelling. (4)
The milecastle was examined by Simpson in 1927 (no primary reference) but the gateway remained to be excavated. The north-south dimensions appear to have been 65 feet 6 inches across (5a).
