Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 16638

Hob Uid: 16638
Location :
Northumberland
Wark
Grid Ref : NY8480076160
Summary : Possible remains of a bastle incorporated into the farmhouse at Low Moralee. A bastle was recorded on this site in 1604 and though the present farmhouse is thought to be later in date, the unusual thickness of the north and east walls suggest that they represent the remains of an earlier fortified structure.
More information : Low Moralee [T.I.] (1)

Moralee is mentioned in the survey of 1604. (2)

NY 84807616. The present farm is comparatively late, but
incorporates two walls of an earlier structure; the north wall, 0.95
m. thick, and an east wall, now an interior wall, 1.3 m thick and
two storeys high.
The owner, Mr. Hall, has no information to offer about the history of the farmhouse. The strength of the walls and the excellent
situation suggests a former defended house. (3)

Condition unchanged. (4)

NY 847761 Probable reconstructed bastle. (See Type-site NY88SE14) (5)

Listed by Cathcart King and by Dodds. ((6,7)
