More information : (NY 81897979) Cross (GT) (Remains of) (1) The site of the town of Shitlington in the parish of Wark is marked by the socket-stone and broken shaft of a wayside cross, which probably dates from the 13th century. A fair was traditionally held at the cross, and Elizabethan silver coins have been found. (2) The tradition of the fair is correct. The four Elizabethan silver coins were found at and near the cross in about 1926 and 1936. The finder is now dead, and the coins have been distributed. (a) The cross consists of a socket stone supporting a bevelled shaft 1.8m. high. (3) There are no surface indications of former habitation in the vicinity of the cross. (4) No change. No traces of this "town site" are visible on available APs. (R.A.F.1946) (5)
NY 8189 7978. Medieval wayside cross, 300m W of Bridge House. Scheduled RSM No 25063. The cross is visible as a socket stone measuring 0.79m by 0.74m with a worn step; it is well embedded in the ground but stands to a height of 0.38m above ground level. There is a central socket hole in which stands a stone shaft 0.4m by 0.35m and 1.8m high with its top broken off. The shaft has wide chamfered edges. The wayside cross is believed to date from the 13th century. It is also listed Grade II. (6)
