Hob Uid: 16566
Location :
Northumberland
Wark
Grid Ref : NY8189079790
Summary : Medieval wayside cross of which the stepped socket stone survives. Alleged site of Shitlington deserted medieval village; no earthwork remains.
More information : (NY 81897979) Cross (GT) (Remains of) (1)

The site of the town of Shitlington in the parish of Wark is marked
by the socket-stone and broken shaft of a wayside cross, which
probably dates from the 13th century.

A fair was traditionally held at the cross, and Elizabethan silver
coins have been found. (2)

The tradition of the fair is correct. The four Elizabethan silver
coins were found at and near the cross in about 1926 and 1936. The
finder is now dead, and the coins have been distributed.

(a) The cross consists of a socket stone supporting a bevelled shaft
1.8m. high. (3)

There are no surface indications of former habitation in the
vicinity of the cross. (4)

No change. No traces of this "town site" are visible on available
APs. (R.A.F.1946) (5)

NY 8189 7978. Medieval wayside cross, 300m W of Bridge House.
Scheduled RSM No 25063. The cross is visible as a socket stone
measuring 0.79m by 0.74m with a worn step; it is well embedded in
the ground but stands to a height of 0.38m above ground level.
There is a central socket hole in which stands a stone shaft 0.4m
by 0.35m and 1.8m high with its top broken off. The shaft has wide
chamfered edges. The wayside cross is believed to date from the 13th
century. It is also listed Grade II. (6)
