Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1623

Hob Uid: 1623
Location :
Northumberland
Biddlestone
Grid Ref : NT9224007360
Summary : Probable medieval farmstead surviving as an earthwork.
More information : NT 92240736. Oval earthwork. (1)

Remains of a small earthwork situated upon a gentle east slope of
pasture at approx 800 ft above sea-level. It consists of four
contiguous irregular-shaped enclosures bounded by banks of earth and
stone. There are traces of what appear to have been two small
rectangular huts, end to end.

In the centre of the site, a small oval-shaped compartment may have
been another dwelling-place.

The site appears to have been a Homestead for one or more families
with their stock. (2)

The work in form and construction is consistent with the
local type of native homestead, the rectangular huts being possible
later additions.
In fair condition. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

The presence of any RB work here is questionable, the whole appears
to be contemporary and is more likely to be associated with the rig
and furrow ploughing to the N and W. (4)

As described in report of 29 1 75. Surveyed at 1:10 000. (5)

NT 9221 0735. Medieval farmstead 650m NW of Clennell. Scheduled
RSM No 25021. The remains of a farmstead of medieval date, visible
as four irregular contiguous enclosures and the remains of two
rectangular houses. The enclosures are bounded by earthen banks
4m wide which stand to a height of 0.7m. The largest enclosure
measures a maximum of 17m by 21m and the smallest 8m by 6m. The
rectangular houses are attached to the outside of the most
easterly enclosure and measure 4m by 6m. (6)
