Summary : An irregular enclosure, possibly a settlement of Bronze Age date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs to the south of Berry's Lane, Pingewood. The ditched enclosure is sub-square in shape, but with curved boundaries on its western and southern side. It measures 41 m by 43 m and the ditch measures up to 4 m in width. The enclosure is located immediately to the north east of two ring ditches (NRHEs 1605695 and 1605692) and may have been sited here because of their presence. A linear ditch, possibly a trackway, extends from the northernmost of the two ring ditches to the south east for a distance of 26 m. This trackway may be associated with the settlement, using the ring ditch as a point of reference, or may be later in date. The enclosure has been destroyed by modern quarrying. |
