Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 1588

Hob Uid: 1588
Location :
Northumberland
Biddlestone
Grid Ref : NT9077008890
Summary : Three Bronze Age round cairns surviving as structures.
More information : Three possible tumuli discovered during field investigation.

'A' NT 9078 0888. A mound largely of earth but with a few large
stones protruding. It is 5.5m in diameter and 0.5m high with slight
traces of a ditch on the NW side. No trace of retaining circle.

'B' NT 9080 0887. A badly mutilated mound with an apparent diameter
of 11.0m and a maximum height of 0.7m. There is a large hollow in
the NW quadrant. Two earthfast stones near the perimeter may be part
of a retaining circle. No trace of ditch.

'C' NT 9082 0888. A mound of earth 5.0m in diameter and 0.4m high. No
trace of ditch or retaining circle. (1)

'A' is probably a cairn, the slight ditch, however, is
probably no more than a sheep walk.

'B' although mutilated is a well defined mound and probably also a
cairn, the remains of a kerb are questionable.

'C' is no more than a spoil heap probably excavated from 'B'. (2)

NT 9077 0889 'A'. A turf-covered cairn as described.

NT 9080 0888 'B'. A turf-covered cairn about 9.0m diameter,otherwise
as described.

NT 9081 0887. 'C' An irregular shaped turf-covered earth and stone
mound, not a cairn and most probably a spoil heap from 'B' as
suggested.

Surveyed at 1:10 000. (3)

NT 9077 0889. Round cairn 420m NW of Uplaw Knowe. Scheduled RSM No
25018. The cairn measures 5.5m in diameter and stands to a maximum
height of 0.6m. 'A' above.

NT 9080 0887. Two round cairns 375m NW of Uplaw Knowe. Scheduled
RSM No 25017. The most easterly of the two cairns ('C' above) is
5m in diameter and stands to a maximum height of 0.6m. The second
cairn ('B' above) is situated 8m to the W and is more substantial
than the first and measures 11m in diameter and stands to a height
of 1m maximum. There is a large shallow hollow in the upper surface
of the NW quadrant, the result of an unrecorded partial excavation.
