| Summary : The footings of elements of the 17th century Principal Court, part of Audley End House (Monument Number 541502), and perhaps the earlier Walden Abbey (Monument Number 373672) are visible as parchmarks on aerial photographs taken in 2010 and as high resistance anomalies in geophysical surveys conducted in 1994, 2009 and 2010. They extend across the west lawn, over an area measuring 100m north to south by circa 75m wide. Some of the features correlate with buildings shown on Henry Winstanley's map of 1688 although others, within the area of the court, do not and could relate to parts of the earlier, medieval abbey. Other parchmarks to the west relate to the 17th century avenue walk or drive (Monument Number 1512689) and to the north the 17th century Store Yard (Monument Number 1583836). |
